Marathi OCR: Same Script, Different Problems

Marathi is written in Devanagari, the same script as Hindi, so the two share the hard parts: vowel signs written above and below letters, consonant conjuncts, and the horizontal shirorekha. If you have already tried Hindi OCR and been disappointed, a Marathi document will feel familiar.

The differences that matter in practice are about content and age, not script. A large share of Marathi documents in need of digitisation are older — government records, Sahitya Akademi prints, Saraswat-type periodicals from the mid-twentieth century, and family papers. Older print means weaker paper, faded ink, and typefaces that no longer map cleanly to modern Unicode.

How to Convert a Marathi PDF to Text

  1. Go to Meow OCR — no signup, works in the browser.
  2. Upload the Marathi PDF or image (JPG, PNG, TIFF).
  3. Pick Marathi, or use auto-detect.
  4. Extract, then copy or download the editable text.

For large books, process a page range first and check the quality before committing to the whole document.

Where Marathi OCR Tends to Break

  • Legacy typefaces. Older Marathi print sometimes uses encodings that predate modern Unicode, and the mapping is imperfect. Characters silently substitute rather than failing loudly, so read the output rather than trusting it.
  • Dense matras. Words like those containing the anusvara or the chandra vowel marks carry several small marks at once. In a faded scan these merge.
  • Handwritten revenue records. Old patrak and land records are written quickly in cursive Devanagari. This is genuinely difficult for every OCR engine, including commercial ones.
  • Modi script. Historical Marathi documents may be in Modi, an older cursive script. It is a separate writing system with its own training data, not a variant of Devanagari.

Getting a Usable Result From an Old Document

Digitising a 1950s Marathi book is a different job from digitising this week's form. Three practices help:

  • Test one representative page. A page from the middle of the book tells you everything about whether the scan settings are right.
  • Scan in greyscale at 300 DPI. Colour scanning adds nothing for black text and increases file size; 150 DPI loses the small marks.
  • Plan for a proofreading pass. For old print, treat the OCR as a first draft. It typically removes 80–90% of the typing work rather than eliminating it.

FAQ

Is this free?

Yes. Free to use, no watermark, no credit card. Files auto-delete after two days.

Can I convert a Marathi PDF into speech instead?

Yes. The audiobook tool takes a PDF, extracts the text, and returns an MP3 narration. Marathi voices are included among the available languages.

What accuracy should I expect?

Modern clean print: high. Twenty-year-old offset print: good with proofreading. Faded carbon copies and handwriting: variable, often needing manual correction.
